Type 2 diabetes: A disease in which there are high levels of blood glucose. Insulin is necessary for cells to use glucose for energy. Type 2 diabetes involves insulin insensitivity (cells ignore insulin to some extent). Over time, the body also fails to produce enough insulin to process the glucose in the diet.
