A new study has reported that moderate-intensity physical activity reduces the risk of breast cancer. Both moderate and vigorous physical activity have been reported to reduce the risk of breast cancer. The study included 1,000 Mexican breast cancer cases and 1,074 matched controls. An in-person interview was used to collect information concerning health, diet and physical activity from the participants. Physical measurements and blood samples were also obtained from all the women.
Participating in moderate-intensity physical activity was found to reduce the risk of breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women. The risk decreased in premenopausal women by approximately 4% for every three hours per week of moderate-intensity physical activity and 10% in postmenopausal women. The authors conclude that strategies should be identified that will engage women in exercise programs.
